The characteristics and purpose of digital media
Define Digital Media
Digital Media is content consisting of audio, video, graphics that have been encoded or digitally compressed into a computer readable format. This media is situated on local device such as a CD, DVD, Hardrive or remote location like a website. Some may say that digital media is not very different from analog recorded media which have been around for decades. The major uniqueness is that the media can be easily created, copied, edited and transmitted. From there the media can be streamed, downloaded or stored on media such as CD or DVD and even today iPods allow us to experience this anywhere and anytime. Digital Data is represented by the binary code system which the computer uses to process and store information. The binary language is composed of 0s and 1s. It is stored in switches (transistors) as either on or off, just like a digital signal.
